Hey there, fellow travelers! I recently had the opportunity to visit Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and I have to say, it was an experience I will never forget. From the bustling streets to the vibrant culture, this city has so much to offer. In this post, I’ll be sharing my personal experience and all the things that made Addis Ababa so special for me. So grab a cup of coffee and get ready for an adventure!
Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, located in the central highlands of Ethiopia, is the country’s capital and largest city. With a population of over 3 million people, it’s a hub of cultural, political, and economic activity. Despite its modern development, the city has a rich history that dates back over 3,000 years, and it’s home to several important cultural and historical sites.
Planning and Preparation:
Planning a trip to Addis Ababa is relatively easy, as there are many direct flights available from major cities around the world. I recommend booking your flight and accommodation in advance to get the best deals. As for currency, the Ethiopian Birr is the official currency, and you can easily exchange it at banks and exchange offices around the city. When it comes to visas, most countries require a visa to enter Ethiopia, but the process is straightforward, and you can apply online or at the embassy.
Accommodation:
When it comes to accommodation, Addis Ababa has a variety of options to suit every budget and preference. I stayed at the Taitu Hotel, a historic hotel located in the heart of the city, and I loved it! The hotel has a charming atmosphere and provides excellent service, making it the perfect base for exploring the city. If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly, there are also plenty of guesthouses and hostels available, such as the Yod Abyssinia Hostel.
Food and Drink:
One of the things I loved most about Addis Ababa was the food! The city is a melting pot of different cultures and cuisines, and you can find everything from traditional Ethiopian dishes to international cuisine. I highly recommend trying injera, a sourdough flatbread that’s a staple of Ethiopian cuisine, and sharing a few plates with friends at one of the many local restaurants. When it comes to drinks, coffee is king in Ethiopia, and you can find some of the best coffee in the world here. Make sure to visit one of the many coffee shops for a delicious cup of Ethiopian coffee.
Culture and Traditions:
Ethiopian culture is rich and diverse, and Addis Ababa is a great place to experience it firsthand. From the religious festivals to the vibrant music and dance scenes, there’s always something happening in the city. One of the must-see cultural experiences is visiting the National Museum of Ethiopia , where you can learn about the country’s rich history and see the famous Lucy skeleton, one of the oldest hominid fossils ever discovered.
Activities and Adventures:
Addis Ababa has plenty of activities and adventures to keep you busy. For outdoor enthusiasts, the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains and forests, making it a great destination for hiking and trekking. I took a day trip to Mount Entoto and it was an amazing experience! The views from the top are breathtaking, and you can see the entire city from up there.
Another must-visit attraction is the Mercato, the largest outdoor market in Africa. You can find everything from spices and textiles to electronics and jewelry here. It’s a great place to shop for souvenirs and get a feel for the local culture.

My visit to Addis Ababa was a truly unforgettable experience. From the rich culture and history to the delicious food and beautiful scenery, this city has so much to offer. I highly recommend adding it to your travel list and experiencing it for yourself. Whether you’re a first-time traveler or a seasoned adventurer, Addis Ababa is sure to leave a lasting impression.
